Shenzhen Info

If you visited the Shenzhen area 30 years ago, you would have travelled across the border from Hong Kong and arrived in a fishing village surrounded by paddy fields. In 1980, Deng Xiaoping initiated the “Shenzhen Special Economic Zone” as an experiment for promoting the development of economic and social development of China and Shenzhen has quickly become a world leader in technology, manufacturing, and most recently design.

In less than 20 years, Shenzhen has established itself as an economic center in China and has laid the foundation to support a new phase of further growth. Located in the south of China’s Guangdong province, Shenzhen looks south to Hong Kong across the Shenzhen River.

Shekou, a district on the western edge of Shenzhen offers a bustling nightlife centered around Sea World Plaza and is conveniently located near the Shekou Ferry Terminal and Shenzhen Bridge. One can travel by ferry to both Hong Kong and Maccau. The Shenzhen Bridge offers quick access to Kowloon and Hong Kong. Several restaraunts surround this neighborhood hub offering western and international cuisines. One can find franchise chains such as Starbucks, Papa John’s, Pizza Hut and, of course, McDonalds and KFC!

Shekou is a primarily a residential suburb of Shenzhen. Many expat families make their homes in the Shekou district due to the proximity of several international schools — Shekou International School, Quality Schools InternationalInternational School of Nanshan Shenzhen, and Shenzhen American International School.

Garden City and Coastal City shopping areas offer ice skating, cinema and the Poly Theaterwhich is located at Coastal City. Garden City is best known for its proximity to the Nanshan Walmart and Decathlon (a major sporting good store).

There are several neighborhoods available in and around Shekou. There are very few properties that are single homes with yards. Many properties are fully furnished so it is not always necessary to ship your belongings.

A few of the more well known neighborhoods are Peninsula, Coastal Rose Garden, Mont Orchid, Crystal Gardens, Garden City and JingShan Villas. There are several more housing options in the Overseas China Town neighborhood about 20 minutes from Shekou.
